☆ Boy George ☆
I’ve always been partial to George’s music and his whole public persona. I relished photographing him over the years as he always took time to pose for me at gigs, club nights and launch parties. We met properly when various publications (DJ Magazine, Metropolitan, City Limits, Number 1 Mag, etc.) commissioned me to interview him, especially during the Jesus Loves You period and thereafter.
Those who dismiss him as an opportunistic Jack of all trades miss the point. You can’t survive four decades in the music business without talent and George literally oozes it. Besides DJ-ing around the globe, he added more feathers to his hat, making headway in his other fields of interest, i.e. fashion design, photography, journalism, TV presenting, acting and talent show judging.
However, music being his first love, it’ll be interesting to see if he manages to hit the national charts again? Given that he’s already achieved so much in his professional life, another burning question is, will he ever take the time to put his feet up and indulge a rest on his laurels? Watch this space!
Meanwhile, let’s give a true English eccentric due respect; there aren’t many of them left.
George is unique and his tabloid-grabbing shenanigans still make jaws drop. More importantly, after some major upheavals in his personal life, he managed to get his career back on track in 2013 with the release of This Is What I Do, a great studio album that he promoted on both sides of the pond. He also reformed Culture Club, with a tour which kept him busy in 2014/15 and again in 2018, backed up with Life, the band’s well-received last album.
There’s no doubt that he Boy is full of beans and looks incredibly healthy and happy again. Moreover, he kicked off 2020 unleashing a new sparkling smile. Indeed his freshly veneered gnashers take years off him. Like Bowie, he waited decades to get them fixed, but it certainly was worth the wait.
Two words spring to mind – national treasure – and absolutely not one to be buried just yet!
