London-based photojournalist Alex Gerry started building his portfolio at the dawn of the ’90s, reporting the capital’s nightlife and music events at The Evening Standard and editing the music and nightlife sections at London’s weekly Metropolitan Magazine.
He kept a prolific profile during that decade, spending six fruitful years at DJ Magazine, while also editing the club and music sections of Night Out in London, After Dark, Fresh Direction, Thud and Boyz Magazines. He also acted as UK editor at Julie Jewels and Michael Alig’s Project X Magazine in NYC. Other notable regular contributions (past and present) include Mojo Magazine, Record Collector Magazine, Girl About Town, Ms London, 125 Magazine, QX and Palladium, to name but a few UK titles; DIF (Portugal), Les Inrocks, VSD and Technikart (France), Prinz (Germany), Interview and Gazelland (USA).
He’s edited the club, bar and restaurant sections of Eurostar’s widely distributed New London Magazine since its launch in 2008.
Bookwise, Alex has already contributed to eight group publications: The Edge’s “In & Out of Planet Earth”, Carlton Books’ “Homme”, Merrell’s “Panic Attack!” (2007), YBCA’s “Meet Me at the Edge of the World” (USA, 2009), MCA’s “This Will Have Been” (USA, 2012), Constable & Robinson’s “Mammoth Book of Gorgeous Guys” (2012), “Kunstforum” (Austria, 2014) and Piet Meyer Verlag’s “Verwandlungskünstler” (the ultimate Leigh Bowery publication, Austria, 2015).
He also has two solo books awaiting publication: “Club Freaks & Disco Pigs” (an illustrative history of avant-garde clubland) and an as yet untitled music photography retrospective, peppered with quotes from the artists.
Photo exhibitions include: “Panic Attack!” (Barbican Centre, 2007), “Club Icons” (solo exhibition @ Village, London Soho, 2007/08), “Leigh Bowery” (ArtMen-Paris, 2008), “Meet Me at the Edge of the World” (YBCA, San Francisco, 2009), “This Will Have Been” (Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, 2012, which then moved to Minneapolis’ Walker Art Centre, 2012, and Boston’s Institute of Modern Art, 2013), and “Xtravaganza: Staging Leigh Bowery” (Vienna’s Kunsthalle, 2012/13). Alex showed solo at the Islington Museum from Oct. 16th to Jan. 16th 2016. Simply entitled Trade, the exhibition celebrated the emblematic after-hour club’s 25 years in Islington (click Various Press link below).
Alex Gerry’s images featured in Crane TV’s “Club To Catwalk”, the documentary produced in conjunction with the V&A Museum 2013/14 exhibition.
Alex took part in Lost In Music, an underground culture group exhibition enlisting some of the most innovative nightlife photographers. After launching at Shoreditch’s Village Underground on December 4th, 2015, it moved to theprintspace Gallery in February 2016 (click Various Press link below). Other venues in the UK and worldwide are planned.
